The Wonderful Company is teaming with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen to expand a scholarship program supporting first-generation California students.
The Wonderful Community Scholarship has broadened the effort, providing aid to students in Allen’s hometown of Firebaugh.
Only 4.1% of residents age 25 and older in the western Fresno County farming town hold a bachelor’s degree.
“This program is about more than a scholarship fund, it’s a way to open new doors for the next generation of leaders,” said Allen, a fourth-generation farmer and 2024 National Football League MVP. “I’m proud to partner with Wonderful in bringing this opportunity to my hometown of Firebaugh.”
The program assists first-generation students through the college application process and provides up to $12,00 over the course of four years in university.
40 Students Will Receive Scholarships This Year
Eligible 12th-grade students at Firebaugh High School were contacted in August by their school administration. The scholarship program accepted 40 eligible seniors this year, supporting their journey to higher education.
“The majority of our Wonderful Education Scholars, 90% of whom identify as first-generation, cite finances as one of the biggest barriers to pursuing a college education,” said Andy Anzaldo, chief operating officer of corporate social responsibility at The Wonderful Company.
“We believe that with the right tools, every student can succeed not only in pursuing higher education but in exploring new pathways toward professional and economic opportunities.”
Additionally, the program will offer scholarship opportunities to students in Wasco, a Kern County farming community.
