Father Arrested After Merced Toddler Dies in Unsecured Firearm Accident

A Merced toddler died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot with an unsecured firearm, leading to the father's arrest. (City of Merced)

A 2-year-old child died Friday after accessing an unsecured firearm and suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Merced Police Department said in a statement.

Officers responded to a report of a gunshot injury at approximately 4 p.m.

Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the child died upon arrival at the hospital.

Following an investigation, authorities determined the toddler found the unsecured weapon at home.

The child’s father was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of child endangerment resulting in death.
