California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton offered gasoline for $3 per gallon to drivers at the Loma Vista Travel Plaza in Sanger on Thursday as he criticized a proposed vehicle-miles-traveled tax.
The event was limited to the first 150 vehicles. Drivers could purchase up to 12 gallons of gasoline at the discounted price on a first-come, first-served basis.
Hilton also held a news conference at the travel plaza, where he voiced opposition to a proposed tax based on the number of miles a vehicle travels. He pointed to fellow gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s support for the policy.

Hilton said California’s high fuel costs are driven in part by taxes, fees, and energy regulations, arguing that lower prices would provide relief for Central Valley families and commuters.
The event comes as California drivers face some of the highest gasoline prices in the country, with gasoline approaching $6 per gallon and diesel reaching about $8 per gallon in many parts of the state.
