A former Marine recruiter accused of exploiting his position to target minors is facing serious felony charges following a months-long investigation by the Central California Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives arrested Philip Rodriguez, 32, of Palmdale, on Thursday in San Diego County.

Rodriguez, a U.S. Marine Corps staff sergeant, was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges including contacting minors for the purpose of sex, possession of child sexual abuse material, and sending harmful matter to minors.

He was released after posting bail and is scheduled to appear in Fresno County Superior Court on Nov. 25.

The investigation began in February when ICAC received a report of criminal activity involving Rodriguez, who was stationed in Fresno as a Marine recruiter at the time.

According to detectives, Rodriguez’s role required working with minors interested in military service. He is accused of sending inappropriate digital images to a potential female recruit, according to authorities.

Further investigation showed two additional female minors allegedly targeted by Rodriguez in similar ways, authorities said.

By the time authorities secured an arrest warrant, Rodriguez had been reassigned to Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

His arrest was coordinated with assistance from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and other ICAC team members.

Detectives are urging anyone with information about Rodriguez to contact detective Rosario at (559) 760-6282 or submit tips anonymously at www.valleycrimestoppers.org.
