Canales, who authorities say is a known gang member, was arrested late Wednesday night after fleeing deputies in a white Chevy Tahoe, running a stop sign, and crashing into a southeast Fresno home.

The incident began around 9:47 p.m., when sheriff’s deputies, part of the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium, noticed a disturbance near Verrue Avenue and Eighth Street involving a group of possible gang members.

As deputies approached, Canales jumped into the Tahoe and sped away. He refused to stop, leading deputies on a brief 27-second pursuit, authorities said.

The chase ended tragically when Canales blew through a stop sign at Cedar Avenue, plowed through a fence, and slammed into a home, killing Mang Yang, 25, and her sister Eliza Yang, 18, who were inside.

Canales fled on foot but was quickly tracked down with help from a Fresno Police helicopter. He was arrested on E. Ball Ave.

Authorities say Canales is on probation for firearm possession. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of evading police and vehicular manslaughter, police said.
