An Acura driver suffered major injuries Wednesday in a crash with a gravel truck that overturned on Highway 33 at Coalinga-Mendota Road, prompting a prolonged closure, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened about 11:30 a.m.
A preliminary investigation found that the Acura driver entered the opposing lane and collided with a northbound truck tractor pulling two gravel trailers, causing the truck and trailers to overturn, the CHP said.
The Acura driver was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Coalinga Regional Medical Center.
The CHP said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Highway 33 remained closed at Highway 198 and Coalinga-Mendota Road as crews worked to clear spilled gravel and diesel fuel. There was no estimated time for reopening.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The CHP advised drivers to avoid the area and use an alternate route.
