A man suspected of a violent assault on an unhoused individual on Aug. 26 in Fresno’s Tower District has been arrested, the Fresno Police Department reported in a news release on Thursday.

Roberto Felipe Olivera, 25, was identified as the suspect in the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. outside a business at 936 E. Olive Ave.

Authorities allege Olivera repeatedly kicked the 47-year-old victim in the head while he was asleep. A 911 caller alerted authorities, stating that the suspect fled the scene heading eastbound on Olive Avenue.

The victim, who sustained significant head injuries, was conscious when officers arrived and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Detectives from the Fresno PD Street Violence Bureau launched an investigation, using surveillance footage from a nearby business to identify Olivera.

On Wednesday, detectives coordinated Olivera’s surrender with the help of his family. He was taken into custody, interviewed, and booked into Fresno County Jail on felony assault charges.
