Democrat Roy Cooper won North Carolina’s U.S. Senate race Tuesday, defeating Republican Michael Whatley and flipping the seat to Democratic control, according to The Associated Press.
The AP called the race for Cooper at about 5:24 p.m. Pacific time, with vote counting still underway.
At the time of the call, Cooper had about 66.8% of the vote to Whatley’s 31.6%, with roughly 56% of the expected statewide vote counted. Only about 3.4% of precincts had fully reported, reflecting the large number of early votes already included in the statewide totals.
Cooper, a former North Carolina governor, gives Democrats a pickup as they seek control of the Senate.
Libertarian Shannon W. Bray and Green Party candidate Michael Dublin were also on the ballot.
