A pedestrian died early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle and then, seconds later, by a Visalia police patrol vehicle on Mooney Boulevard, authorities said.
The collisions happened about 4:05 a.m. Nov. 1 at the intersection of Mooney Boulevard and Beech Avenue, according to the Visalia Police Department.
Police said a vehicle traveling north on Mooney Boulevard struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway. The collision left the pedestrian down in the road, with his personal belongings scattered throughout the area.
A few seconds later, a marked Visalia Police Department patrol vehicle on routine patrol was traveling north on Mooney and entered the intersection at Beech.
Police said the officer, unaware of the earlier collision, struck the pedestrian who was already down in the roadway.
The officer blocked traffic and provided assistance to the injured pedestrian, according to police.
Emergency medical personnel responded and transported the pedestrian to Kaweah Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.
The California Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation into both collisions to provide an independent review, police said.
Roads in the area were temporarily closed during the investigation but have since reopened.
Visalia police directed additional questions about the incident to the CHP.
