A 28-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill his father, then resisting officers who used a police K-9 to take him into custody, authorities said.

The Coalinga Police Department said the incident began about 11:09 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, when a man entered the department’s lobby and reported that his son had physically assaulted, choked, and threatened to kill him.

The victim, who was bleeding from his face, declined medical attention. He identified his son as Cristino Lopez, 28, of Coalinga, and told officers Lopez was considerably larger than him, appeared to be under the influence of drugs, and was “out of control,” police said.

Officers responded to a residence in the 400 block of East Pleasant Street, where they contacted Lopez.

Police said Lopez displayed signs consistent with being under the influence of controlled substances and appeared to have blood on his hands and knuckles.

According to police, Lopez was behaving erratically and making incoherent statements.

When officers attempted to detain him and conduct a pat-down search for weapons, Lopez retreated toward a detached, converted room in the backyard.

Officers believed Lopez was attempting to barricade himself and tried to stop him, but he began physically resisting, police said.

Officers repeatedly ordered Lopez to place his hands behind his back and stop resisting, but he refused, according to the department.

Taser Ineffective, Police Said

Police deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective.

K-9 Boss arrived while officers were attempting to restrain Lopez. Police said they gave Lopez at least 10 verbal warnings to surrender or the dog would be deployed.

When Lopez continued resisting, officers released Boss, who helped subdue Lopez and take him into custody.

One officer suffered minor injuries during the confrontation.

Lopez was transported to Coalinga Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and medically cleared before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.

He was booked on charges including felony assault and felony resisting an officer.
