Merced High School students and staff were evacuated Thursday after a bomb threat prompted a lockdown and a search of the campus, authorities said.

The Merced Police Department was notified of the threat about 1 p.m. Officers immediately responded to the school and placed it on lockdown.

Police conducted an initial search of the campus and determined there was no immediate danger. Students and staff were then safely evacuated while officers continued a more thorough search of the school grounds.

No suspicious items were found, police said.

The Fresno County K-9 Unit assisted with the search, while the Merced County Sheriff’s Office handled calls for service for Merced police during the response.

Police said the cooperation of parents, students, and school staff helped ensure students were safely reunited with their families in a timely manner.

The bomb threat remains under investigation, police said.
