A fire burning along Interstate 5 near Smokey Bear Road forced traffic diversions in both directions Thursday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported.

As of 4:45 p.m., southbound I-5 traffic was being diverted east onto Highway 138, according to CHP’s Fort Tejon office.

Meanwhile, CHP officers from the Newhall office were turning northbound traffic around at Smokey Bear Road.

Authorities said the fire was burning just north of Smokey Bear Road along the east side of the freeway and in the center median.

CHP did not provide an estimated time for reopening the affected roadway.

Drivers traveling through the Grapevine should expect disruptions as the incident continues.
