The Trump administration barred journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from entering the White House grounds Thursday morning, hours after a federal judge ordered the immediate restoration of their access.
It was not initially clear if the administration was intentionally defying the judge’s order, or if the journalists had been blocked because of some logistical confusion among security personnel. The judge issued his order overnight, around 1 a.m. Eastern.
Lawyers for the three outlets have requested an immediate hearing with the judge on the matter. The lawyers wrote that the Justice Department did not respond to their queries Thursday morning.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.
President Donald Trump’s ban on the outlets prompted the major networks to suspend the television pool, which usually serves as the main source of video footage for presidential events. As of Thursday morning, the TV pool had not resumed.
Trump has several high-stakes meetings Thursday with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping. As of now, the major networks do not plan to carry pool footage of those meetings.
