Meritage Hospitality Group, one of Wendy’s largest franchisees, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Sept. 17, citing profitability pressures and record beef prices, USA TODAY reported.

The company operates 314 Wendy’s restaurants across 15 states and owes Wendy’s International nearly $25 million. Court filings list 1,000 to 5,000 creditors and assets and liabilities between $10 million and $50 million.

Meritage said it may close or sell underperforming restaurants while restructuring.

The company also cited an 11.3% same-store sales decline, severe winter weather, weaker brand marketing, tariffs, and higher beef costs. It employs 8,850 workers nationwide across its operations.
