Exeter High School was evacuated Thursday after a possible elemental mercury spill was reported inside a classroom, police said.

Exeter Police Department officers received the report at about 11:28 a.m. at the school.

The affected classroom and adjoining classrooms were immediately evacuated, and students were initially moved to another area of campus, according to police.

Exeter police and fire personnel responded and requested a specialized hazardous materials team to assess and address the possible spill.

As a precaution while the HazMat team responded, officials evacuated the entire campus and sent students home for the remainder of the day.

Police said the evacuation was precautionary and that police, fire personnel, and the HazMat team were continuing to work to ensure the campus was safe.

Additional information was expected to be released as it became available, police said.
