Fresno Chaffee Zoo has named its two African lion cubs Jubilee and Indy, with both names honoring their July 4 birthday, the zoo announced.

The female cub was named Jubilee, a reference to a special celebration or anniversary, while the male cub was named Indy, short for independence.

The cubs have been resting and bonding with their mother, Zamaya, behind the scenes at the zoo. The litter is Zamaya’s second.

Guests can currently see the cubs’ siblings, Asali and Taraj, in their habitat in the zoo’s African Adventure area.

African lions are considered vulnerable in their natural habitat, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo participates in conservation efforts for the species through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan and Saving Animals From Extinction program.

The zoo said it will continue sharing updates about Zamaya, Jubilee, and Indy on its social media accounts.

The cubs are also available for virtual adoption through the zoo’s website.
