The Fresno Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint Saturday night at an undisclosed location in the city.

The checkpoint is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes have occurred.

The department said the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Police remind drivers that impairment can be caused by substances other than alcohol.

Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with a person’s ability to drive, and driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal despite its legal medicinal and recreational use in California.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, according to police.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided through a California Office of Traffic Safety grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
