A wildfire burning in Los Padres National Forest grew to 2,000 acres and was 5% contained Tuesday morning as firefighters worked to protect hundreds of threatened structures and evacuation orders remained in effect.

The Timber Fire, burning southeast of Loma Vista in Monterey County, began at 10:44 a.m. Sunday. The cause remained under investigation, according to CalFire.

The fire remained active overnight along its northern and eastern portions, primarily above the marine layer, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Firefighters observed individual trees torching and flames making uphill runs. The fire continued to hold east of Highway 1.

Firefighters focused structure protection efforts near Highway 1 in the Ventana area. Crews cleared brush and other potential fuels around properties, established water systems and secured access for firefighters and equipment.

A heavy marine layer limited visibility overnight and prevented helicopters from flying to water-dipping sites below the marine layer.

The fire was threatening 259 structures. No destroyed or damaged structures, injuries or fatalities were reported in the information released by fire officials.

Evacuation Orders, Warnings

Evacuation orders were in effect for zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and MRY-F028-A.

Evacuation warnings were issued for MRY-F023, MRY-F024 and MRY-F028-B.

A temporary evacuation point was established at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel.

About 480 personnel were assigned to the fire, including 36 engines, seven water tenders, eight helicopters, five bulldozers and 13 hand crews. Air tankers from around California were conducting suppression missions as conditions allowed.

Warmer and drier conditions were expected over the eastern portions of the fire early to midweek. There was a 15% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening.
