California and Nevada are battling multiple wildfires throughout the two states, including a 15,000-acre fire that broke out along the border this weekend.

California wildfire season has grown to span most of the year, leading the state to face over 4,500 fires in 2026.

And there is an increased risk of fires from July through October as the state heats up and the snowpack dries out. Currently, the state is working to snuff out 17 wildfires.

This includes two Northern California fires that have burned more than 10,000 acres each.

Over the state line, Nevada is facing its own batch of wildfires with the largest currently spanning more than 50,000 acres.

Bug Fire

A large wildfire, now dubbed the “Bug Fire,” started this weekend along the California-Nevada border near Reno.

Bug Fire started over the weekend and had burned more than 6,500 acres by Saturday night and more than 11,000 acres by Sunday evening.

As of Monday morning, the fire had burned 15,000 acres with containment at 3%, according to Cal Fire.

Washoe County in Nevada has issued evacuation orders to areas north of Cold Springs, about 20 miles northwest of Reno. And the Reno-Stead Airport has closed to general aviation, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority announced Monday.

A second fire, Fred Mountain Fire, has burned more than 1,300 acres northeast of the Bug Fire, prompting additional evacuations.

Gann Fire

Gann Fire has been burning for over a week in Calaveras County — spreading more than 10,339 acres.

As of Monday morning, fire crews had contained 78% of the wildfire, which was first reported at 5:27 p.m. on Aug. 3 along Gann Road in Valley Springs.

It has resulted in one fatality and forced more than 1,400 residents to evacuate.

Cal Fire began shrinking evacuation orders this weekend, allowing folks to return to their homes. Currently, evacuation orders span the footprint of the fire.

Authorities arrested Herbert Wayne Smith, 65, on suspicion of unlawfully causing a fire that burned structures or forest land, allowing a fire to escape, and operating machinery without clearance.

Smith was released on bond and expressed remorse in an interview with KCRA, saying he did not intentionally start the fire.

Antelope Fire

Another wildfire, named “Antelope Fire,” broke out this weekend on Highway 46 near Highway 41, burning in Kern and San Luis Obispo counties.

It was first reported at 4:59 p.m. on Saturday and grew to 2,091 acres by that night causing temporary road closures.

Currently, the fire spans 2,410 acres, and crews have reached 45% containment.

MP18 Fire

The MP18 Fire, located along Highway 96 at Norton Creek in Humboldt County, had burned 1,335 acres as of Sunday night.

The fire began late Friday, prompting Cal Fire to close a portion of Highway 96 and put evacuation warnings in place. Workers have contained 10% of the fire.

Mouse Meadow Fire

In Nevada, a lightning-caused wildfire on military land has scorched more than 51,000 acres after beginning on July 30.

Due to the fire burning in areas already closed to the public, no evacuations have been ordered.

Fire crews from the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, United States Air Force and the U.S. Department of Energy are working together to contain the blaze. It is now 65% contained.

Quail Springs Fire

Northeast of the Mouse Meadow Fire, the Quail Springs Fire has burned approximately 13,600 acres.

The fire was caused by lightning near Area 51 on July 25. It is currently 75% contained.

New Pass Fire

Another lightning-caused wildfire erupted on July 26 and has grown to a 37,899-acre blaze.

A crew of personnel are battling the fire, located about 30 miles northwest of Austin in Nevada. It is 81% contained, greatly improving over the last few days.

Ward Fire

The Ward Fire, located in Nevada’s White Pine County, has burned 8,775 acres since starting on July 31.

Multiple departments from southern Nevada have assisted local crews in battling the wildfire. Now, it is 67% contained and crews are returning home.
