A convicted felon was arrested after investigators recovered a loaded handgun, suspected cocaine, and ammunition during an investigation in Kings County, authorities said.

Investigators with the Kings County Major Crimes Task Force attempted to stop a wanted man Thursday after seeing him driving near 11th Avenue and Lacey Boulevard in Hanford, according to the Kings County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the suspect as Gilbert Navarro, 34, of Corcoran. Investigators said Navarro resisted efforts to take him into custody.

Investigators found Navarro carrying a loaded Sig Sauer .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun in his waistband, according to the sheriff’s office.

A search at Navarro’s residence led investigators to recover what authorities described as a large amount of suspected cocaine and ammunition.

Based on the quantity of suspected narcotics recovered, the presence of items associated with drug sales and the overall investigation, investigators believe the controlled substances were possessed for sale, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities said Navarro, a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.

Navarro was booked into the Kings County Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of narcotics for sale, possession of a loaded firearm while in possession of controlled substances, possession of controlled substances and resisting a peace officer.

The investigation remains ongoing.
