Clovis City Councilmember Diane Pearce faced criticism from several of her colleagues at this week’s council meeting over her political rhetoric. Councilmembers urged her to adopt a more respectful tone in public discourse.

Pearce and Clovis Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua are running against each other for an anticipated opening on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.

District 5 Supervisor Nathan Magsig is the overwhelming favorite in the heavily Republican Senate District 12 race on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Councilmember Drew Bessinger said Pearce’s use of labels such as “woke,” “weak,” and “RINO” (Republican in Name Only), against political opponents normalizes personal attacks and called on her to “dial back the rhetoric.” Bessinger and Pearce are conservatives.

Councilmember Lynne Ashbeck, a political moderate, echoed those concerns. Ashbeck said the city’s residents “deserve more” from elected leaders and argued that inflammatory language fuels political division and undermines civic leadership.

I ‘Call Them as I See Them,’ Responds Pearce

Pearce defended her comments, saying she focuses on policy issues rather than political campaigns. Pearce also said that she’d continue to “call them as I see them.”

Mouanoutoua closed the discussion by appealing for respect and compassion, referencing the council chamber’s “In God We Trust” motto. He also encouraged members to treat one another with love despite disagreements.

When Pearce sought to respond further, Mouanoutoua closed the discussion, saying she would have another opportunity to address the issue at the next council meeting.
