A vegetation fire prompted escorted one-way traffic control on Highway 59 in Merced County on Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The traffic restriction is in effect between Merced Falls Road and Fields Road as fire crews continue working in the area.

Motorists should expect delays for the next three to four hours, authorities said.

The CHP urged drivers to consider alternate routes if possible. Those who must travel through the area are advised to slow down, remain alert and follow directions from emergency personnel.

Authorities said the roadway will reopen once crews have contained the fire and it is safe to do so.
