The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in a suspected hit-and-run Thursday morning as Bernard Anhelm, 71, of Sanger.

Officers responded about 5:26 a.m. to a welfare check on Academy Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets after a passing motorist reported an unresponsive person lying in the roadway, according to the Sanger Police Department.

Officers and emergency medical personnel provided aid, but Anhelm was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said his injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Investigators believe the driver left the scene before emergency responders arrived, and the collision is being investigated as a fatal hit-and-run.

Academy Avenue near Fifth Street was expected to remain closed for several hours Thursday while investigators processed the scene.
