The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols Saturday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., targeting drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
The department reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Officials said certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect driving ability and urged drivers to follow usage directions and warning labels.
Police also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers arrested for a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the department.
Funding for the enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
