A man died early Friday morning after being ejected from his vehicle in a crash involving an overturned car in a vineyard near Clovis and Jefferson avenues, authorities said.
The crash was reported at about 3:30 a.m. after a passerby found an overturned vehicle in a field at the southeast corner of the intersection with an unresponsive man outside the car, according to the California Highway Patrol Fresno office. CHP officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.
Investigators said an adult man was driving a Honda sedan southbound on Clovis Avenue, north of Jefferson Avenue, when the vehicle veered off the roadway for reasons still under investigation. The car entered a dirt field, struck a pole and overturned into a grape vineyard.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.
Authorities said it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, pending toxicology results. The collision remains under investigation.
