The Hanford Police Department says it has received numerous reports of a possible mountain lion within city limits and is working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to assess the situation.

Police said they are in contact with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding the reported sightings.

Residents who see an animal resembling the one described are urged to keep their distance, move indoors if possible and report the sighting to the Hanford Police non-emergency line at (559) 585-2540 so it can be relayed to state wildlife officials.

Officials also asked residents not to report domestic cats, noting that only credible sightings of a large wild animal should be reported.
