The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday night as part of an effort to deter impaired driving and improve road safety.
The checkpoint is scheduled from 9 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location within the city, according to police.
Officials said checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a history of impaired-driving crashes.
Police reminded motorists that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. While marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.
According to the department, a first-time DUI conviction can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
