The Fresno Police Department will conduct an enforcement operation Friday targeting drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.

Under current state law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or other electronic communications device while operating a vehicle, police said. The restriction includes talking on a handheld phone, texting or using mobile applications while driving.

Authorities said using a handheld cell phone while driving is punishable by a fine. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to the driver’s record.

Police urged motorists who need to make an important phone call or program directions to pull over in a safe location before using their devices. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting a trip.

Funding for the enforcement program is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
