Los Angeles County officials are investigating two possible acts of voter interference discovered just days before California’s June 2 primary election, according to ABC News.
County Registrar and Clerk Dean C. Logan said election staff found a small number of vote-by-mail ballots with fire-related damage inside an official ballot drop box outside the Civic Center in downtown Los Angeles during routine collection Sunday morning. Preliminary information suggests the incident was isolated and involved only a limited number of ballots.
Separately, vandalism was discovered Sunday at a voting center in Cesar R. Chavez Park in Long Beach. Logan said election workers responded immediately and voting operations were not disrupted.
Both incidents were reported to the Los Angeles Police Department, and no arrests have been announced.
Officials said they are working to identify voters who may have been affected. Logan and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis said any attempts to interfere with voting or election operations will be taken seriously and prosecuted under the law.
