One person died and another was injured Tuesday after a tunnel collapse during a construction project near Knights Ferry, the Modesto Fire Department said in a statement.

The Modesto Fire Department and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District were dispatched at about 3:42 p.m. to the area near Schell and Sonora roads, where crews found a tunneling project had collapsed, according to officials.

One individual had already escaped the tunnel before first responders arrived and was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as minor to moderate.

A second person remained trapped inside and was later confirmed dead despite rescue efforts. The person trapped was recovered at 10:04 p.m.

The incident is in Calaveras County and is being handled under Unified Command involving the Copperopolis Fire District, Modesto Fire Department, Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, and the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department.

The Modesto Fire Department said that more than 30 firefighters responded, using three engines, two truck companies, one rescue, one squad, and multiple utility vehicles.
