Fresno police arrested five drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI enforcement operation Sept. 19, the department said.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

The Fresno Police Department plans another DUI enforcement operation Oct. 24 and additional DUI patrols and checkpoints throughout the year.

Funding for the enforcement program was provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
