A satirical petition calling for Denmark to buy California for $1 trillion has surpassed 200,000 signatures, CBS reported.
The “Denmarkification” petition emerged in response to President Trump’s continued interest in purchasing Greenland, a Danish territory.
In January, Trump said he hadn’t ruled out military force to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. Greenland’s leader, Múte B. Egede, rejected the idea, saying his people do not want to be Americans.
Using tongue-in-cheek language, the petition suggests Trump might be open to selling California. “Let’s be honest – Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan,” it states. “We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price.”

Petition organizers set a crowdfunding goal of $1 trillion, though they are only collecting signatures, not donations.
If California were to become Danish territory, Solvang, known as the “Danish Capital of America,” is suggested as its capital.
