A man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on Thursday that left one person dead and another critically wounded outside an In-N-Out restaurant, the Hanford Police Department said in a statement.

Officers responded to the parking lot around 8:14 p.m. after reports of gunfire and a crash, authorities said.

They found a wrecked white SUV with a passenger, Daniel Dawson, 23, of Lemoore, who had died from a gunshot wound.

The driver of the SUV, who also had a gunshot wound, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and is not expected to survive, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing a man flee the vehicle toward 12th Avenue after the shooting and crash.

Detectives worked overnight to gather evidence and identified Rafael Estrada, 27, of Hanford as a suspect.

With assistance from the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, investigators tracked Estrada to an apartment complex in Goshen, where he was arrested.

Police said a motive remains under investigation but believe an illegal drug transaction may have played a role.

Estrada was booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
