OpenAI just launched Operator, a clever AI tool that can handle computer tasks by itself by watching and interacting with what’s on your screen.
AI expert Simon Willison pointed out that it looks a lot like Anthropic’s similar tool from last fall, showing how competitive this space is getting.
If you’re a ChatGPT Pro user, you can try Operator to handle routine web tasks, though it’s still hit-or-miss with trickier operations.
Safety Measures and User Control
OpenAI’s built in some safeguards: You’ll need to approve sensitive actions, and there are limits on what it can access. You can also control how your data is used and deleted.
Still, Willison suggests playing it safe: “Start fresh each time you use Operator to keep your login details separate between tasks.”
While Operator marks an exciting step forward in how AI and humans work together, the usual privacy and security concerns remain.
