The Fresno Police Department released Friday afternoon “critical incident video” of an Oct. 26 officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of known gang member Andy Morales, 40, of Fresno.

The video contains graphic images taken from police Axon body-cameras and surveillance videos and is not suitable for all viewers.

The video shows that Morales initiated the confrontation by pulling up to a marked police car on South Seventh Street, just south of East Verrue Avenue, and firing 10 rounds from an AR-style pistol — three of which struck a sergeant in the vehicle.

Despite his injuries, the sergeant pursued Morales, who was in a blue Nissan Frontier pickup. Later, Morales jumped out of the truck and used it as cover while firing at the sergeant, who returned fire in a gun battle lasting more than a minute.

Other officers arrived and shot Morales. With Morales down, the sergeant requested ambulances for Morales and himself. Morales died after being transported to Community Regional Medical Center.

Sergeant Recovering From Bullet Wounds

The sergeant was released from the hospital several days later but continues to recover from bullet wounds to his legs, authorities said.

A police spokesman said that no more information would be provided because the investigation is ongoing.

The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, police Internal Affairs, and the city’s Office of Independent Review, the spokesman said.
