Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has publicly criticized Israel for its actions against Gaza, describing them as a breach of international law. Sanders referred to Gaza as an “open-air prison” where millions are struggling to access basic needs. This follows the announcement by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of a total blockade on Gaza, including the cessation of electricity, food, and fuel supplies, in response to a recent terrorist attack by Hamas.
Sanders condemned the targeting of civilians, which is a violation of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, and called Israel’s denial of basic necessities to Gaza a serious breach of international law. He also criticized the Hamas attack, describing it as a significant obstacle to peace and justice for the Palestinian people.
Despite the Biden administration and other lawmakers expressing unwavering support for Israel, Sanders urged the U.S. to demand restraint from Israeli forces attacking Gaza. Sanders, one of the most prominent Jewish politicians in America, has been more critical of Israel than most Democrats and has previously suggested imposing conditions on U.S. aid to Israel.
