Homicide detectives have arrested a suspect in the April 15 slaying of a Sunnyside High School student near the Fresno Cambodian Buddhist Temple.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Tyvanh Sysaknoi, 20, of Fresno, on Wednesday morning in an apparent gang-related shooting.
Sysaknoi was charged with voluntary manslaughter and booked into Fresno County Jail. His bail was set at $95,000.

Responding to a report of shots fired at Valentine and Princeton avenues, deputies found Nolyn Chann, 16, of Clovis, wounded and on the ground. Chann later died at Community Regional Medical Center.
“The people involved in the shooting were in this area of town to attend the event at the temple,” said sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti in a news release.

During their investigation, detectives learned that Chann and others had attacked rival gang member Sysaknoi. He retaliated by shooting at them, striking Chann, authorities said.
Chann’s killing occurred during a festival at the temple a short distance from the homicide scene.
