With Republicans back in control of the House, Rep. David Valadao has been appointed to two powerful committees — appropriations and budget.
“I am honored to continue my service on the House Committee on Appropriations and for the opportunity to join the House Committee on Budget,” the Hanford Republican said in a news release on Monday.
“Serving on both the budget and appropriations committees gives the Central Valley a seat at the table in determining how your tax dollars are spent — a responsibility I do not take lightly. I look forward to working in the Republican majority to return to regular order and get our fiscal house in order.”
Valadao is a longtime Republican ally of Speaker Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield.
The rules that govern committee assignments are at this link.
Valadao is serving on three appropriations subcommittees:
- Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration
- Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies
- Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, and Related Agencies
Texans Chair Appropriations, Budget
Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) is the appropriations chair. Granger, who has been a House member since 1997, is a fiscal conservative.
The budget committee chair is Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas). The Hill reported that Republicans reached a deal during the election of McCarthy as Speaker to set government discretionary spending levels for the fiscal year 2024 back to 2022 levels.
However, it’s worth noting that a GOP proposal for a 23% national sales tax to replace income taxes rose and quickly fell from favor last week.
