A Fresno area BMX racing legend is headed to the sport’s National Hall of Fame.

Randy “Stumpdog” Stumpfhauser, 45, will be inducted at the National BMX Hall of Fame and Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Stumpfhauser, who was born in Fresno and raced out of Sanger, is now a school teacher at Fresno’s Yosemite Valley Charter School.

He got his first taste of BMX at 9 years old when his father took him to the track in Sanger.

Stumpfhauser’s ‘Amazing Feats’

Hall of Fame officials said in a news release on Monday that Stumpfhauser “will long be remembered for his amazing feats in BMX racing.”

As an amateur, Stumpfhauser won the American Bicycle Association’s No. 1 Cruiser title. In his first year in the pro ranks, he won the Golden Crank Rookie of the Year. During his long long career, he accumulated 15 combined (ABA, National Bicycle League, and Union Cycliste Internationale) Cruiser titles,

Most notable: Stumpfhauser was the Cruiser champion in the sport’s three sanctioning bodies from 2002 through 2004. And, at 32, he was the oldest pro to ever win an ABA Pro title.

Didn’t Worry About ‘Making a Mark’ in BMX

“I just kept going, trying to be the best that I could be, not worrying about making a mark on the sport,” Stumpfhauser told ESPN in 2010 before he retired. “I have just enjoyed seeing different parts of the world. The trips I enjoyed the most were going to Australia, France, and South Africa.”

Like many BMX racers, Stumpfhauser suffered several serious injuries, including torn ligaments in both knees. At a 2007 race in France, he broke his collarbone, scapula, and a rib when he became unclipped from a pedal and flew over his handlebars.

“Stumpy was always in the main and usually up for the day’s win,” the National BMX Hall of Fame noted. “Whether it be ABA, NBL, or a UCI event, you would never count out Stumpy for the win.”

Other 2022 Hall of Fame Inductees

This year’s Hall of Fame Class also includes racer Andy Patterson, freestyler Kevin Jones,  freestyler T.J. Lavin, racer Tara Llanes, Vans legend Steve Van Doren, and BMX race announcer Roger Plaskett.
