Michael Reid, longtime deputy police chief in Fresno, is leaving to become the head man in Fowler.

Monday night, the Fowler City Council voted 3-1 to appoint Reid as police chief. He is replacing Rudy Alcaraz, who is leaving to become police chief in Selma.

City manager Wilma Tucker (formerly Wilma Quan) recommended Reid. Tucker worked in Fresno as city manager before moving to Fowler.

“Chief Reid presents a compelling candidacy for the Police Chief role. His experiences in all facets of a police operation provide an excellent background for consideration,” a candidate profile written by consultant Paul Kimura said.

The San Joaquin Valley Sun first reported the hiring.

Starts Next Week

Reid is scheduled to start Aug. 3. His last day in Fresno, where he started as a patrol officer in 1993, is Aug. 1.

Fowler councilmembers Daniel Parra, Juan Mejia and Mark Rodriquez voted yes; Karnig Kazarian voted no.

Reid is also an elected member of the Caruthers Unified School Board
