The last time Ana Victoria Montoya spoke to her father, he told her he feared being picked up by immigration agents. The next day, he was dead.

Her father, Carlos Roberto Montoya, a Guatemalan immigrant, regularly sought day-labor work outside a Home Depot in Monrovia, California, according to an investigation published Tuesday by Bloomberg Businessweek. Federal agents had raided the parking lot and detained some of his friends.

On Aug. 14, 2025, Montoya fled another immigration operation, ran onto the 210 Freeway, and was struck by an SUV. He later died at a hospital.

Ana, who lives in Guatemala, had stayed in contact with him while he worked to support his family. His death fueled protests and calls for answers about immigration enforcement at Home Depot stores.

The retailer says it receives no advance notice of federal raids and does not participate in them.
