The city of Fresno honored former California Lt. Gov. Cruz M. Bustamante on Monday, announcing plans to name a new northwest Fresno park after the Central Valley native whose career helped break barriers in state politics.

The park is currently in the property acquisition and design phase. Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said approximately $450,000 in Measure P funds has been spent on the project so far. The city has not announced an estimated completion date.

Dyer said the city plans to return to the community in November to present ideas for the park based on residents’ priorities.

“We will be coming back, in November, I believe it’s November 10th, to present the ideas that the community presented in terms of what their priorities, would be for this property,” Dyer said.

About Bustamante

Born in Dinuba, Bustamante served as California’s 45th lieutenant governor from 1999 to 2007. Before that, he made history in 1996 as the first Latino elected speaker of the California Assembly.

Bustamante also became the first Latino in more than a century to win statewide office in California.

Throughout his political career, Bustamante advocated for education, economic development, and greater opportunities for underserved communities. His legislative accomplishments included efforts to improve classroom textbooks and expand educational opportunities for students.

Known for his warm personality, sense of humor, and ability to build consensus, Bustamante forged relationships across political lines while maintaining strong ties to the Central Valley.

Park Location

The park, located near Veterans Boulevard and Barstow Avenue, will serve as a lasting tribute to Bustamante’s public service and his impact on the region and California politics.
