The threat of possible immigration raids has now reached the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
After consulting with community partners, the zoo announced Monday it has canceled its Día de los Muertos celebration scheduled for Nov. 1.
The family-friendly event, celebrating Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, honors deceased loved ones and celebrates an annual tradition in the central San Joaquin Valley.
However, a surge in arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents this month has created unrest and heightened fears among immigrant families across the Valley.
“Please understand that this decision reflects our desire to stand in solidarity with the community and ensure their safety,” the Fresno Chaffee Zoo posted.
Despite the cancellation, the zoo plans to honor the holiday with special decorations, an art display from Arte Americas, and two ofrendas, temporary altars created during Día de los Muertos to honor those who have died.
Community members are invited to visit the zoo and bring photos of their loved ones and beloved pets from Oct. 27 through Nov. 2.
The zoo also announced it will donate to Faith in the Valley, a nonprofit organization that advocates for an accessible path to legal status and citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
“We remain committed to ensuring the Zoo is a safe and welcoming place for all families,” the Zoo posted on social media “We believe this decision reflects that commitment to our community.”
