Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is donating $80 million to support Democrats in the final weeks before the midterm elections, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
At least $50 million will go toward House races, reflecting the billionaire’s goal of helping Democrats capture a sizable majority. The contribution comes as Republicans still enjoy a significant fundraising advantage.
Bloomberg adviser Howard Wolfson told the Times that the former mayor believes campaign resources can shape election results. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries welcomed the donation, pointing to Bloomberg’s financial support in 2018, when Democrats won back control of the chamber.
