Visalia police issued 39 citations to drivers for violating California’s hands-free cell phone law during a distracted driving enforcement operation Thursday.
The Visalia Police Department said the citations were issued as part of an effort to reduce distracted driving and improve road safety.
California’s distracted driving laws have been in place since 2008. Under current law, drivers are prohibited from holding a cell phone or other electronic device while driving, including when talking on the phone, texting, or using apps.
Drivers caught using handheld cell phones can face fines. A second conviction for the same offense within 36 months also results in a point being added to the driver’s record.
Police urged motorists to pull over and park in a safe location before making phone calls or entering directions into navigation apps.
Authorities also recommended silencing phones or placing them out of reach before driving to minimize distractions.
The enforcement operation was funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
