A man has been charged with murder after authorities said he exchanged gunfire with another man during an argument over a parking spot in Baltimore on Saturday, killing a 12-year-old girl who was caught in the crossfire.
The man, Tyree Reynolds, 23, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of the girl, Khloe Ishway, Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the Baltimore police commissioner, Richard Worley, said in a statement. Reynolds also faces charges including attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, they said.
“Khloe was just 12 years old,” the statement said. “She should have a whole life ahead of her: school, a career, time spent with family and friends. Instead, she was killed because two adult men resorted to deadly violence to resolve an argument over a parking spot.”
At about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the police were called to Leon Day Park in West Baltimore, where a youth football and cheerleading league was hosting a homecoming celebration. Officers found two gunshot victims: the girl and a 25-year-old woman, Worley said at a news conference Saturday night.
They were taken to hospitals, where the girl died of her injuries, he said. The woman was treated for minor injuries, as were two men, 28 and 23, who later walked into hospitals on their own, he said.
Officials said Tuesday that the parking dispute had been the cause of the argument, which Worley said Saturday involved two men who “both opened fire on each other” and “in the crossfire the 12-year-old little girl, who was probably down there watching football, was shot and killed.”
He said he did not know how many shots were fired and declined to say what kind of guns were used. It was unclear, he said, why the men were at the football game.
