Human remains discovered by people exploring an area off Agua Fria Road are the subject of an active coroner investigation, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to the area July 26 after receiving a report of possible human remains.
Personnel investigated the scene and recovered the remains, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The California Department of Justice also responded to assist with the investigation.
The remains were later sent to the Department of Justice for processing and assistance with identification. The identity of the individual has not been confirmed.
The Sheriff’s Office said that once a positive identification is made, officials will work with the individual’s next of kin and family before releasing identifying information publicly.
No additional information will be released while the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office said, citing the need to protect the investigation and respect the individual and their family.
