The Fresno Police Department is urging drivers to keep the final days of summer “fun, not fatal” by avoiding impaired driving and practicing road safety during the upcoming Labor Day period.
Extra officers will patrol from Wednesday, Aug. 13, through Sept. 1, focusing on suspected impaired drivers as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
DUI checkpoints are planned for Saturday, Aug. 16, and Saturday, Aug. 30, from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. at undisclosed Fresno locations. A DUI saturation patrol is set for Saturday, Aug. 23.
Police advise motorists to plan ahead by arranging a sober ride, buckle up, follow speed limits, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. They note impairment can come from alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicine, or cannabis.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 12,429 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes nationwide in 2023 — one every 42 minutes.
Funding for the Fresno enforcement efforts comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the federal agency.
