A man already in custody for an unrelated homicide has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Fresno in January 2022, police said.

Michael Cameron Fitch, 35, was charged Wednesday with murder and home invasion in the killing of Ursolo “Frank” Sermeno, 47, according to the Fresno Police Department.

The charges stem from a shooting reported on the evening of Jan. 8, 2022. Officers from the department’s Southeast Policing District responded at about 6:27 p.m. to an apartment on Winery Avenue near McKinley Avenue after a report of a disturbance and the sound of glass breaking.

When officers arrived, they found the rear sliding glass door of an apartment shattered and Sermeno unresponsive inside with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Despite efforts by officers and EMS personnel, Sermeno died at the scene at 7:03 p.m.

Homicide detectives launched an investigation and, with assistance from the California Department of Justice, eventually identified Fitch as a suspect through DNA evidence recovered at the scene.

Fitch is being held at the Fresno County Jail on charges related to a 2021 homicide.
