NEW YORK — A man was taken into custody Monday after police said he set a fire, ignited fireworks and waved a gun outside a federal building in Manhattan that houses federal immigration courts.
Officials did not release the man’s name or indicate a motive.
The New York City Police Department said the incident happened around 8:30 a.m., and a firearm was recovered from the scene. One person was taken to New York Downtown Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza,” the FBI said in a statement. “The individual has been taken into custody.”
The agency’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes the Police Department, is investigating the incident.
The building houses the New York field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. The building has been the site of numerous arrests of asylum seekers and immigrants, who are held in cells on the 10th floor.
In a video posted to X by Freedom News TV, an independent news outlet, officers were seen running from the building as a cloud of white smoke billowed out. They then wrestled a man to the ground on the sidewalk.
